One of the first collaborations of Webber and Rice, this melodious “sung-through” musical relates the Biblical story of Joseph, a favorite son with the gift of interpreting dreams, as he incurs the jealousy of his eleven brothers with his magnificent coat of many colors, is sold into slavery in Egypt, and eventually saves the country, becoming Pharaoh’s second-in-command. The delightful score blends a mix of calypso, early rock ‘n roll, country-western, and a bit of vaudeville, featuring the familiar Close Every Door, One More Angel in Heaven, and the signature Any Dream Will Do. The poignant reconciliation of Joseph with his father Jacob and his eleven brothers is an inspirational ending to uplifting family entertainment.
