February 19-20-Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest (Sunrise Campground-Logan Canyon)

Troop One recently participated in the Old Ephraim District, Trapper Trails Council, Klondike Derby, held at Sunrise Campground in Logan Canyon. Twelve scouts and four leaders and parents from Troop One unpacked their vehicles at 6:00 pm Friday evening, and hiked into their campsite; making final changes to their pre-built snow caves and trenches. By 8:00 pm, all were treated to some good, old fashioned spicy homemade chili.

Saturday morning, scouts, and parents woke up to a skiff of snow, than broke out our Meals Ready to Eat (MRE’s) entrees and plopped them into a large pot of boiling hot water to cook. After 20 minutes, all were hungry and ready to consume such piping hot dishes as; Cajun Rice and Sausage, Chicken w/Cavatelli, and Vegetable Manicotti. Though the MRE’s didn’t quite come close to a Saturday morning breakfast at Angie’s Restaurant, they were hot, tasty, and filling. Enough at least to last till lunchtime!

After breakfast, Troop One led the 150+ Klondike Derby participants in the morning flag ceremony, as we have on numerous district and council scout functions. The next 2 ½ hours were than spent on rotating through a variety of skill stations such as knot tying, fire starting, first aid and ice rescue. All scouts participating in this year’s Klondike Derby learned many new skills from a variety of adult and scout volunteers; all putting in 150% of effort to make this year’s Klondike Derby a most memorable event!

Would've been a great event for our scouts:however, upon leaving our bundle of sticks wrapped in a heavy duty tie down along side the trail as we hiked in, we returned to find them gone. Apparently our sled became the fuel for another troops fire.
