February 27-Dry Canyon, Smithfield, UT

Story by Troop One Boy Scout Ryan M.

On Saturday, February 27, Seven Boy Scouts from Troop One worked on Tracking Merit Badge; one of four Historic Merit Badges to be reintroduced during 2010 for the BSA Centennial Celebration. Ryan M., Calvin G., Jacob H., Bryce H., Nathan I., Austin O., and Matt H. were the scouts who participated in this afternoon’s outing. The merit badge is being taught by Assistant Scoutmaster Randy Martin, with assistance today provided by ASM’s Jason Grimes and Stu Parkinson.

Our scouts started off today on Tracking Merit Badge by looking for animal tracks in Dry Canyon in Smithfield. Then after a long, cold hike we worked on requirement number one; stalking their prey. We stalked two of the assistant scoutmasters! The scouts had to learn to be quiet and swift to not be seen. We got less than 100 yards away from our assistant scoutmasters.

The last thing we scouts did was drive up Smithfield Canyon to look for animal or bird tracks to make plaster casts. We did not find any suitable for that requirement. The scouts then went deeper into Smithfield Canyon to look for animals. Just our luck, we saw 12 turkeys up on a hill. We then headed home, running into three more turkeys on the way. The scouts then met back at Lee’s Marketplace in Smithfield for the conclusion of our outdoor adventures.
