July 14- Congregation Brith Sholem-Ogden, Utah

Troop 1 Scouts were up early today and on the road to break ground on an Eagle Scout Project at a synagogue in Ogden, UT. Joshua Whitney, who is both a member of congregation Brith Sholem and a scout with Troop 1, is working on his Eagle Scout Project this summer. Wanting to do a “mitzvah” for his synagogue, he is renovating the front yard, by removing the dirt and weeds, and putting in a red brick patio, decorative rock, and xeriscape plants.

Joshua came up with the idea for this Eagle Project just a few months ago. He felt sad that the front yard of the synagogue was looking run down. The front sprinklers were broken, which caused the lawn to die and the weeds took over. Joshua remembers thinking, "Somebody should do something about that." Then he thought, "Why not me?"

Since Troop1 is a non-denomination troop, there is a great diversity of religious affiliation: Presbyterian, Episcopalian, Baha’i, Jewish, LDS, etc. For many of the scouts, today marked their very first visit to a Jewish house of worship, so before they started working, they were given a quick tour of the synagogue by Joshua’s mom. Congregation Brith Sholem (“Covenant of Peace”) was built in 1921 and is currently on the National Historic Register of Historic Places.

While this marks Troop 1’s first Jewish Eagle Scout Project, it might also be the troop‘s farthest. The return trip from Logan to Ogden clocks in about 100 miles. Troop 1 members attending today’ were: Scoutmaster Tom Hogan; Committee Member Gillian Whitney; Senior Patrol Leader Ryan Martin; Assistant Senior Patrol Leader Joshua Whitney; and scouts Dan Hogan, Mathew Hogan, Cameron Kent, & David Whitney. In addition, fellow synagogue member, Cole Stern of Ogden, UT, was there to lend a hand.

The Whitney family is impacting the community with its civic concerns ... congratulations to all the non-denominational volunteers who, working together, are making this project happen.
