Father and Son killed on Valley View Highway

Nissan pickup driven by Terry K. Barnett

LOGAN — A father and son were killed Saturday night in a head-on collision on Valley View Highway, State Road 30. Terry K. Barnett and his son Nicholas C. Barnett were traveling eastbound in a 1991 Nissan pick-up, near mile post 101, when they were hit head-on. The vehicle which hit the Barnett’s was a 2003 GMC Envoy, driven by Alfonzo E. Vasquez of Brigham City. According to Lieutenant Lee Perry of the Utah Highway Patrol, Vasquez was traveling westbound when he lost control and crossed the center line, striking the Barnett’s truck head-on.

The accident occurred at 6:02 p.m. Saturday. At the time, snow and strong winds caused the highway to be snow covered. Perry says it is believed that Vasquez was traveling to fast for the conditions.

Both Terry K. Barnett, age 70, and Nicholas C. Barnett, age 33, were pronounced dead at the scene. They were both residents of North Logan.

Alfonzo Vasquez was also injured in the accident and had difficulty communicating with UHP officers. He was transported to Logan Regional Hospital in serious condition.

Valley View Highway was shut down for approximately 2 hours while officers investigated and crews removed the wreckage. No arrests were made. Perry says investigation into the accident will continue.
