Sky View keeps No. 2 hopes alive with 9-6 victory over Roy

SMITHFIELD— After dropping five of eight games to fall into the middle of the Region 5 race, the Sky View Bobcats have now reeled off three consecutive wins to get right back in the thick of things. The Bobcats most recent victory, a 9-6 win over Roy, left SV tied with rival Mountain Crest for second place in the region standings.

With only one game remaining in the regular season, the Bobcats can lock up the No. 2 seed with another win at Roy Wednesday or a Mustang loss. Sky View swept the season series with MC, so the Bobcats will get the No. 2 nod in the event of a tiebreaker. The Mustangs travel to valley-rival Logan Wednesday, as each team in that series has won one game.

However, it was Tuesday’s win that allowed Sky View to find itself in this position. Senior Mitch Berryhill was superb on the mound and at the plate for the Bobcats as he hit a double and a triple on the day, while keeping the Roy batters relatively at bay. Zach Hansen was also key for SV as he blasted two home runs on the day.

Much of that offensive outburst came early for Sky View as the Bobcats tallied three runs in the bottom of the first inning and four runs in the bottom of the second inning to build a 7-2 lead. The Royals battled back though. Roy used a three-run fourth inning to get back into the game, and then pulled within one, 7-6, with another run in the top of the fifth.

Sky View wasn’t about to let this one slip away though. Two runs in the bottom of the sixth stretched the SV lead back to three at 9-6, and the Royals were unable to generate anything in the top of the seventh as the Bobcats held on for the victory.

Both the Bobcats and Mustangs will make the state playoffs as they are assured the No. 2 and No. 3 spots from Region 5. Whoever ends up as the No. 2 seed though, will host Region 8’s No. 3 seed at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 14. The No. 3 seed will have to hit the road for their first game, and play at Region 8’s No. 2 seed at 4 p.m. that same day.
