Free fishing day in Utah and Idaho

LOGAN — Saturday is free fishing day in Utah and Idaho. Anyone wishing to fish in public lakes and streams can do it without a license. Phil Douglass is the Conservation Outreach Manager for the Division of Wildlife and said free fishing day gives everyone a chance to try fishing without having to pay.

“The whole purpose of free fishing day is to give people who may be thinking that they may want to get involved in fishing an opportunity to do it without buying a license, said Douglass. “All the rules still apply. You have to follow what baits to use, limits, and all the rules that are there to protect our fisheries resource. You follow those and you can fish without a license that day.”

Rules for fishing in Idaho and Utah can be found on the Division of Wildlife Resources’ websites.

Douglas grew up in Utah and has fished throughout his life. He said locally there are some great places to fish. In some cities, Utah DWR has joined with recreation departments to set up community fishing programs.

“From St. George to a couple in Logan, Skyler pond and the other one in Cache Valley is Wellsville pond and we’re looking to do another one in Cache Valley,” said Douglass. “So these community fishing waters are waters that you can drive to or ride a bicycle to and experience great fishing.”

Douglas said there are fishing reports and tips also posted on line. Those website addresses are wildlife.utah.gov and fishandgame.idaho.gov.
