UPDATE: Investigators still unsure the cause of death for toddler

Cache County Sheriff's Lt. Chad Jensen said a 42-year-woman checked herself into Logan Regional Hospital Wednesday. Hospital staff called dispatch and requested deputies check on the woman's 2-year-old son at her River Height's home.

LOGAN — Cache County Sheriff’s Lt. Chad Jensen said investigators are still unsure the cause of death for a 2-year-old boy, found in a River Height’s home, Wednesday afternoon.

Jensen said preliminary results, from the state medical examiner’s office, did not determine the cause of death for Eli Rutchey. Pathology and toxicology test were also done but the results have not been completed.

Eli Rutchey was found dead in his home by Cache County Sheriff’s deputies, Wednesday afternoon. Jensen said earlier in the day, the boy’s mother, Heidi Rutchey, was driven to Logan Regional Hospital, for an undisclosed medical issue.

After the 42-year-old Rutchey was checked into the hospital, questions arose concerning Eli. Medical staff called police dispatch and requested a welfare check for the child at an address in River Heights.

Jensen said when deputies arrived, they found the boy dead inside the home. Sheriff’s Investigators were called to assist with the investigation.

Investigators obtained a search warrant for the home, said Jensen and will be serving the search warrant Thursday afternoon.

Heidi Rutchey was transported to a Salt Lake area hospital for evaluation. Her condition is unknown.

Jensen said more information will be released as the investigation continues.
