The shutdown in Washington, DC has had little to no effect on local government, according to Cache County Executive Lynn Lemon. But he says that could change if the two sides don’t soon come together.
Lemon says he personally believes everything would work much better if the federal government had to balance its budget just as state and local governments have to do.
“It would solve so many issues if we just lived within our means,” Lemon says. “That’s one of the things that really troubles me. There doesn’t seem to be any accountability as far as how we’re going to pay for programs.
“They can say ‘we’re going to do this, we’re going to do this, we’re going to do that.’ But they’ve got to be able to pay for the program.”
Unfortunately, he says, that won’t happen anytime soon. In the meantime, Lemon says both sides should be willing to work together and both should be willing to give up something.
