Mendon man sentenced to jail for downloading child pornography

Kevin Pence, 28, arrested March 20, 2014 by Cache County Sheriff's deputies on multiple child pornography charges.

LOGAN — A 28-year-old Mendon has been sentenced to 180-days in the Cache County Jail for downloading and distributing child pornography.

Kevin Pence was in 1st District Court Tuesday morning after previously pleading guilty in May, to charges of sexual exploitation of a minor, a second-degree felony.

Both the state prosecutor and Judge Brian Cannell said they were concerned that Pence had said downloading child pornography didn’t harm anyone. Every time someone views images or movies involving children the victims are harmed again, said Cannell.

Pence was arrested at his home in March, suspected of downloading child pornography. He was booked into the Cache County Jail and later released after posting a $5000 bail.

Cache County Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Peterson said investigators found several computer and electronic storage items at Pence’s home. Numerous downloaded pornographic images with children, under the age of 18, were found on those devices. None of the images were of local children.

Pence originally faced 10 charges but had nine dismissed under the plea deal that was made in May.

During Tuesday’s sentencing, Cannell said he had read letters of support from Pence’s family and friends.

“You have a lot of people that care about you,” said Cannell. “Now the question is, do you care about yourself enough to get the help you need?”
