Sandy man appears in court on charges of sexually abusing Logan girl

Matthew C. Henderson, 35, charged with 12 counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, a first-degree felony.

LOGAN — A 35-year-old Sandy man is being transferred back to West Jordan to face the first charges that he sexually abused a Logan girl as more details have emerged about the abuse.

Matthew C. Henderson made his initial appearance in 1st District Court Monday on three charges of sexual abuse of a child, a first-degree felony.

State attorney Spencer Walsh told the court the alleged victim is a seven-year-old Logan girl who claims Henderson molested her multiple times in Logan and at his home in Sandy. The abuses allegedly began in 2011 and continued until March of this year.

Prosecutors in Sandy first filed nine similar charges against Henderson in 3rd District Court, in West Jordan. He’s scheduled to appear again on those charges May 11.

During Monday’s hearing, Walsh said Henderson reportedly was viewing child pornography at the same time the abuse allegations took place. He has also threatened to harm himself since being arrested.

Walsh said Henderson is a threat to himself and others, and asked Judge Allen to keep him in jail without bail.

Judge Allen agreed and ordered Henderson to be transferred back to the Salt Lake County Jail to face the first charges that were filed. He ordered him to appear again in Logan, June 15.

Henderson faces a total of 12 charges, each carrying a maximum sentence of 15-years-to-life in prison.
