Man charged in gun incident at doctor’s office

Rex Porter, 59, arrested and charged, after he entered a doctor’s office and threatened to kill himself.

LOGAN — A 59-year-old Garden City man has been arrested and charged, after he entered a doctor’s office and threatened to kill himself earlier this week.

Rex Porter was arrested by Logan City Police Friday and booked into the Cache County Jail. He was charged with carrying a concealed loaded firearm and use of a dangerous weapon, both class A misdemeanors, and disorderly conduct, a class C misdemeanor.

On Wednesday morning, Porter was reportedly at the Southwest Spine and Pain Center when he brandished a handgun and threatened to kill himself. Police said he was angry with his care and never threatened the doctors or nurses in the office.  No shots were fired and he didn’t point the gun at anyone else.

SWAT teams and negotiators were able to enter the office and talk Porter into surrendering. He was taken to Logan Regional Hospital for treatment and released Friday morning before being arrested.

Porter was released from jail later after posting a $4,000 bond. He is expected to be formally arraigned in 1st District Court in the upcoming weeks.
