Local firefighter dies after battle with lung cancer

Local firefighters and others are mourning the death of 36-year-old Travis Peterson. The former Cache County Fire District Assistant Chief and fire warden from Mendon, died Saturday morning after battling lung cancer the past year.

The District posted a message on its Facebook page Saturday, saying members were saddened by the loss of Peterson who had worked there since 2006. The message described how he had touched the lives of other firefighters through his, “dedication, passion, and commitment to everything good in the fire service.”

It went onto say how Peterson loved being a firefighter and loved working with others fire crews in Cache County. “He was a leader, an example, and a friend. We will miss him greatly.”

Peterson grew up in Smithfield, graduating from Sky View High School in 1998. He followed in his father’s (Fire Chief Jeff Peterson’s) footsteps working as a firefighter and EMT for the Smithfield Fire Department from 1994 to 2005. He later worked for the Weber Fire District and then the Cache County Fire District until February, after being diagnosed with cancer last winter.

Peterson leaves behind his wife Angie and daughter Lydia. Funeral services have yet to be announced.
