Police investigating deputy involved shooting in Right Hand Fork Canyon

LOGAN — Police officers are investigating a deputy-involved shooting Monday afternoon in Right Hand Fork Canyon.

During a press conference, Cache County Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Peterson said deputies were called to the area 10-miles up Logan Canyon to check the welfare of an individual who had been making suicidal threats. Deputies made contact with the man who was reportedly pointing a gun at a woman.

“The suspect did not respond to commands to drop the weapon,” said Peterson. The suspect then made a threatening motion with the weapon, requiring the deputy to fire a single shot, wounding the suspect.”

Multiple law enforcement agencies and emergency crews responded to the scene. A medical helicopter was also requested.

Peterson said after confirming the safety of the gunman, deputies on the scene rendered first aid to the suspect.

“The suspect was transported to Logan Regional Hospital via ambulance, where he was pronounced dead.”

The names of the individuals involved have not been released.

Peterson explained that because the shooting involved a deputy, the investigation is being handled by a separate agency.

“The investigation has been turned over to the Logan City Police Department per our Critical Incident Investigation Protocol.”

Logan Canyon, US-89 was temporarily closed as deputies and officers responded to the shooting. It was later reopened. Right Hand Fork Canyon remains closed.
