A 64-year-old Mendon man was hospitalized Friday afternoon, after he reportedly shot himself in the stomach.

Cache County Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Peterson said Michael Lee Lockhart was cleaning a Glock .45 caliber handgun at his home, near 2460 South 5900 West. He told deputies that after reassembling the gun and loading it, he accidentally fired a single round, striking himself in the lower abdomen.

Lockhart was able to call 911 for help. He used a clean cloth, applying pressure to the wound while paramedics were dispatched to the scene. He was conscious and transported by ambulance to Logan Regional Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Peterson said deputies are treating the investigation as an unfortunate accident and do not anticipate any criminal charges being filed.
