Fire fighters called to a 2-alarm fire at Richmond flour mill

Fire fighters were quickly able to extinguish a two-alarm fire at the Gilt Edge Flour Mill in Richmond, Tuesday afternoon.

Cache County Fire Marshal Jason Winn said the fire was reported just before 2 p.m. by employees at the mill. Smoke could be seen coming from the mill’s duct system by the first units to arrive on the scene. The fire was found within one of the hoppers.

“Fire fighters got in, got some ducts open and put some water down into the ducts,” explained Winn. “They opened up the hopper and put the fire out. It didn’t extend to any part of the building, it was just contained to that hopper.”

The mill’s employees had shut the hopper when they detected the fire, helping to keep it contained.

Winn said fire fighters did an awesome job in extinguishing the fire quickly. He said they also had to rescue two of the mill’s employees.

“They had a couple guys that couldn’t make it through the building because of the smoke, so they were up on the catwalk. So we used a ladder-truck to get the two employees off of the catwalk.”

Winn said the cost of the fire is still being determined but damage was minimal due to the quick actions of firefighters.
