Fifth USU football player arrested in electronics theft

LOGAN — A fifth Utah State football player has been arrested and charged for his alleged involvement in a burglary case involving four others. Ja’Marcus Ingram was booked into the Cache County Jail on Monday, the same day prosecutors charged the 19-year-old with tampering with a witness, a third-degree felony.

Ingram made his initial appearance in 1st District Court Tuesday afternoon. His defense attorney asked the court for some time to determine whether they would like to have a preliminary hearing held.

In April, police arrested two other USU players, Jaylan Brown and Troy Murray, after several video game consoles and games were stolen from a Logan apartment complex in December. The equipment was later traced to a pawn shop in Salt Lake City, where the two 19-year-old men had sold the items for cash.

Later that month, Kevin Meiztenheimer and Dayshawn Littleton were arrested, accused of trying to hit the witness with their car and threatening to return and shoot the victim. Police believe Ingram and the two other 19-year-old men were trying to prevent charges from being filed against Brown and Murray.

During Tuesday’s court appearance, Ingram was informed of the charge against him. Judge Kevin Allen ordered him to appear again on August 22.

Court staff report, on Monday, Murray was sentenced to 12-days in jail after pleading guilty in May to an amended charge of criminal trespass, a class A misdemeanor, and theft, a class B misdemeanor. Judge Thomas Willmore also ordered him to pay $272 to the victim.

In June, Meiztenheimer accepted a plea agreement, pleading guilty to tampering with a witness and obstructing justice, both class A misdemeanors. Under the plea and abeyance, he agreed to pay a $750 fine and write letters of apology to the victims, while on probation.

Brown is scheduled to appear again in court July 18 to decide whether he wants to have a preliminary hearing. Littleton has a preliminary hearing set for August 14.

Four of the five suspects are redshirt freshmen. Meiztenheimer and Murray are linebackers. Ingram and Brown are cornerbacks.

Littleton had committed to the Aggies in May 2016, but doesn’t appear on the roster. He is reportedly transferring to another school.
