LOGAN — A 21-year-old man was hospitalized Tuesday night after being shot in the leg. Police and paramedics were called to a Logan residence near 579 E. 600 N. just after 6:30 p.m.
Logan City Police Chief Gary Jensen said according to witnesses, the man had a revolver inside a backpack. The gun allegedly fired when the bag was dropped on the floor.
“The hammer was forced forward by the impact of the ground,” said Jensen. “Forcing the hammer forward, firing pin forward, and then of course the bullet goes off.”
No one else was injured.
The man had applied a tourniquet to his leg prior to paramedics arriving. He was transported by ambulance to Logan Region Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
“As I understand it, the bullet fractured his leg. So he has got a relatively significant injury but will obviously be stable. They just have to work with him, getting that put back together.”
Officers believe the shooting was accidental. Several witnesses were at the residence when it occurred. They were able to corroborate the man’s account to investigators.
