Police and deputies spend weekend searching for Smithfield man

Police and deputies have spent the last three days searching the mountains east of Smithfield, for a man who reportedly may be injured in the Dry Canyon area. Rodney Brandstatter was last seen Friday afternoon and allegedly called a friend to report he needed help.

Smithfield City Police Chief Travis Allen said they believe Brandstatter was hiking in the canyon, an area he frequently visited on a daily basis. Police initiated a reverse call out, asking residents in the area to watch for the man, who is in his mid-60s.

The friend of Brandstatter reportedly received a voicemail from him, claiming that he was hiking in the canyon and needed help. The message did not say where in the canyon he was.

Deputies with the Cache County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue assisted officers Saturday and Sunday looking for Brandstatter. Lt. Brian Locke said 24 deputies, two helicopters and five K-9 units searched the canyon through the weekend. They planned to continue following up on leads from those who claimed to have seen him in the area.

Allen said officers don’t have much of a description of what Brandstatter was wearing because no one saw him before he went missing. They are asking anyone who may see him or know of his whereabouts to call 911.
