Craig Petersen reflects on years of service as Logan City Mayor

He estimates he’s been on, as mayor, about 45 times over the last few years on KVNU’s For the People program. Outgoing Logan Mayor Craig Petersen has been a guest on the monthly Speak to the Mayor hour and Wednesday was his final installment. As is typical with many outgoing administrations, there is unfinished business. Petersen said as far as the proposed new library is concerned he got the ball rolling, now it will be up to a new administration.

“I probably spent more time working on the library than virtually anything else except the waste water treatment plan. It’s something I’m passionate about, I think Logan desperately needs a new library.I hope that as we move forward that will continue to be a high-priority item.

“But one of the things I’ve had to recognize is that I’m leaving. The decision power will go out of my hands and what I will not do is second guess the new mayor,” Petersen said.

Eight-year municipal councilmember Holly Daines will become Logan’s mayor at the first of the year. Petersen is comforted by the fact that he believes Daines will do a great job in that position.

“I think she’ll be a very thoughtful mayor, she’ll be a very knowledgeable mayor,” Petersen explained. “She won’t be one, I think, that is prone to rash judgments. Holly is very good about studying things out, making decisions.

“In fact, I was talking with a member of my staff this morning, he mentioned that his experience with Holly is that when she has made a decision that there is evidence she may be wrong, she is not wedded to her decision.”

He said he sees that characteristic as “critical” to the job of a Logan Mayor.

Petersen chose to serve for just one term but said it’s been a real honor and privilege for him to serve as Logan’s mayor. He said he has really enjoyed the experience.

He said people keep asking him about his plans for the future. One thing he might do is show up as a semi-regular guest on For the People talking about other things.
