Tuesday morning a Utah student group will place nearly 500 crosses on the south steps of the Utah State Capitol Building in remembrance of victims of the Florida school shooting and all other victims of school shootings the last 50 years.
The event runs from 9 am to noon.
Students For Liberty (SFL) Campus Coordinator Justin Anderson said the goal is to raise funds to support local youth mental health clinics.
“SFL is an international Libertarian student organization of just over 3,000 student leaders throughout the world. In this event we will memorialize the 485 students killed in school shootings.
“We are encouraging donations to one of two clinics, Utah Family Therapy which helps teenagers and youth and NAMI Utah, which provides mental health services.”
Anderson said the event is a call-to-action for the local community. Students from several Utah universities will be on hand. He said the the Utah SFL Chapter began organizing this event the night of the Florida shootings.
All 500 crosses were donated and they were handmade.
“In the wake of mass shootings over the last few years, many people throughout the country have turned to Congress to act. Today, we’re asking the public to act. The solution to this crisis starts at the local level.”
