IN THE NEWS: FACEBOOK CHIEF PROMISES CHANGES
HALF MOON BAY, Calif. (AP) — It’s been under fire for being used to undermine the 2016 electoral process, being a tool for those dispensing fake news — and just being too much of an influence in the world today. But a top official at Facebook is promising to get things squared away with the ubiquous social networking site. In an interview, chief technology officer Mike Schroepfer says the biggest job going forward is to be able to detect which news stories are fake and which are legit. Once it does, he says Facebook is in position to shunt those stories into an area of the site where they are less likely to be seen, commented on — and spread further.
IN THE NEWS: POLICE LOOKING INTO CONNECTICUT LAWMAKER’S ONLINE ACTIVITIESA
HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — So, what is a Connecticut legislator doing sending affectionate texts to a teenage girl? Authorities want to find out — so they are looking into the online activities of state representative Angel Arce. The probe is to determine whether Arce broke any laws in his contact with the 16-year-old girl. The Hartford Courant published a series of texts the 57-year-old Hartford Democrat allegedly sent the teen in 2015. One read, “good night love and sweet dreams and thank you for coming into my life.” An attorney for Arce says his client did nothing improper — and won’t comment further. Arce isn’t married — but is a father of two sons and is also a grandfather. The teen is now 18.
