Dillon Maggard earns second first-team All-American honor in as many days at NCAA Indoor Track & Field National Championships

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Fresh off anchoring Utah State’s first-team All-American distance medley relay squad, senior distance runner Dillon Maggard earned his second first-team All-American honor in as many days as he placed fifth overall in the 3,000-meter race with a time of 8:06.69 on Saturday at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.

“I was seeded 15th, but I was confident I could improve on that,” Maggard said. “I tried to put myself in the best position possible, then kick really hard the last couple of laps. I am happy with fifth, and I’m looking forward to improving come outdoor season.”

Maggard entered the event as the No. 15 seed. However, his strong kick was evident as he ran the final six laps (1,200m) in under 32 seconds each lap. In fact, his final two laps were both under 29 seconds. Maggard exceeded his national ranking by 10 spots, finishing in fifth place ahead of four of his fellow 2017 cross country All-Americans.

The Kirkland, Wash., native is now a seven-time All-American, made up of two cross country honors, four indoor track & field accolades (3,000m, DMR and twice in the mile) and an outdoor track and field honor in the 1,500m.

Overall, the men’s team ended the meet with eight points to place 29th, the best team finish since 1977, when USU took 21st. The Aggies earned four points from the fifth-place DMR finish before Maggard earned four more for his 3,000m performance.

Maggard is now the second-most decorated track & field athlete in school history, trailing only former Olympic thrower James Parker’s nine All-American honors.

The Aggies begin the outdoor season next weekend, when they compete at the Spring Break Classic in Irvine, Calif., on Friday and Saturday, March 16-17.
