NCAA TOURNAMENT

History made as 16th seed ousts No. 1 seed

UNDATED (AP) — The University of Maryland-Baltimore County has made basketball history.

The UMBC Retrievers are the first No. 16 seed to beat a first seed following a 74-54 thrashing of Virginia. Senior guard Jairus Lyles poured in 23 of his game-high 28 points in the second half as UMBC continued to expand its lead. The game was actually tied at halftime before the Retrievers scored the most points allowed by the Cavaliers this season.

Joe Sherburne finished with 14 points, including three 3-pointers while UMBC outscored Virginia by 14 over the first 5:03 of the second half.

Virginia entered the tournament as the No. 1 overall seed after going 31-2 this season, including 20-1 in ACC competition.

UMBC next faces Kansas State on Sunday in Charlotte.

The ninth-seeded Wildcats advanced by getting 18 points from Barry Brown and 17 from Mike McGuirl in a 69-59 downing of No. 8 Creighton. Kansas State led wire-to-wire despite playing without top scorer Dean Wade, who had been expected to see action after suffering a stress fracture in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Tournament.

Meanwhile, another 13th seed has advanced. Marshall moved into the second round of the East Regional in San Diego, one day after fellow No. 13 seed Buffalo trounced Arizona.

Jon Elmore scored 27 points and the Thundering Herd earned their first tournament victory in 31 years by defeating No. 4 Wichita State, 81-75. Jarrod West hit a huge 3-pointer with three minutes left for Marshall, which also got big baskets from Ajdin Penava and C.J. Burks.

The Thundering Herd will be facing a neighbor in the second round Sunday after fifth seed West Virginia knocked off Murray State, 85-68. Jevon Carter provided 21 points, eight assists and six steals to help the Mountaineers withstand Terrell Miller’s 27 points for the Racers.

A couple of Indiana schools will square off in the second round at Detroit as second seed Purdue battles No. 10 Butler.

Carsen Edwards scored 15 points and P.J. Thompson added 11 as Purdue slammed Cal State Fullerton, 74-48. But the Boilermakers will spend the rest of the tournament without center Isaac Haas, who broke his right elbow in a fall after taking a hard foul from Dominik Heinzl midway through the second half.

Kelan Martin scored 27 points and Kamar Baldwin added 24 to carry Butler past seventh seed Arkansas, 79-62. The Bulldogs blew most of a 21-2 lead before regaining control in the second half.

It will be second seed Cincinnati against No. 7 Nevada in the second round of the South Region on Sunday at Nashville.

Jarron Cumberland had career highs of 27 points and 11 rebounds as Cincinnati whipped Georgia State, 68-53. Gary Clark contributed 11 points, 13 rebounds and a big 3-pointer with 9:02 remaining after the Bearcats squandered a 10-point, second-half lead.

Nevada trailed by 14 in the second half before Caleb Martin’s 18 points helped the Wolf Pack rally past Texas, 87-83 in overtime. Martin drained a pair of big 3-pointers in OT and finished with 10 boards and five assists. Kendall Stephens had a team-high 22 points for Nevada.

Sunday’s tournament schedule will include second seed North Carolina against No. 7 Texas A&M in the West Region at Charlotte.

Kenny Williams scored 18 points and Theo Pinson chipped in 15 points in North Carolina’s 84-66 win against Lipscomb. The Tar Heels trailed 33-31 late in the first half before a 12-1 run put them ahead to stay.

Texas A&M was a 73-69 winner against No. 10 Providence as Admon Gilder scored 18 points and Tyler Davis added 14 with 15 rebounds. Robert Williams also had a double-double with 13 points and 14 boards for the Aggies, who were tied at 50 before going on a 12-2 spurt.

It will be Michigan State against Syracuse in one of the two second-round games Sunday at Detroit.

Michigan State managed to escape an upset bid as Miles Bridges scored 29 points to send the third-seeded Spartans past Bucknell, 82-78 in the Midwest Region at Detroit. The Bison hit five 3-pointers with under two minutes to play but shot just 10-for-28 in the second half.

Syracuse won for the second time in the tournament as Marek Dolezaj scored 17 points to lead the 11th-ranked Orange top No. 6 TCU, 57-52. Syracuse trailed by one at halftime before holding the Horned Frogs 31 points below their season average.

Fourth seed Auburn also survived a close call as Jared Harper’s 3-pointer with 74 seconds left gave the Tigers a 59-58 lead in a 62-58 victory against Charleston. Mustapha Heron had 16 points to pace Auburn in the Midwest Region game at San Diego.

The Tigers next face No. 5 Clemson, which shot 56 percent in a 79-68 win against No. 12 New Mexico State. Shelton Mitchell scored a season-high 23 points and Gabe Devoe added 22 as the Tigers advanced to the second round for the first time in 21 years.

Xavier showed why they are the top seed in the West as J.P. Macura poured in a career-high 29 points to lead the Musketeers’ 102-83 rout of Texas Southern. Trevon Bluiett added 26 and Kerem Kanter had 24 in the victory.

Next up for Xavier is No. 9 Florida State, which went on a 15-0 run in the second half to turn a six-point lead into an eventual 67-54 win over Missouri. Mfiondu Kabengele dropped in 14 points and PJ Savoy added 12 for the Seminoles, who had 10 players score at least two points before halftime.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL-MCNEESE STATE-COACH

McNeese State hires hoops coach

LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) — McNeese State is naming Heath Schroyer its next head basketball coach after a search that lasted less than two weeks.

Schroyer has nine years of head coaching experience at Portland State, Wyoming and UT-Martin, going 124-143.

COLLEGE CORRUPTION-NC STATE

Subpoena seeks records between NC State, Dennis Smith Jr.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A grand jury subpoena received by North Carolina State seeks communication records between school officials and its former coaching staff, and ex-Wolfpack guard Dennis Smith Jr. and his representatives.

N.C. State released the subpoena Friday, a week after confirming it was received on Jan. 17 from the Southern District of New York. That’s the same court handling charges that were filed in September in the ongoing federal investigation of corruption in college basketball.

Raptors tie team-record win streak

UNDATED (AP) — The Toronto Raptors have tied a team record with their 11th consecutive victory, keeping them five games ahead of Boston for the NBA’s Eastern Conference lead.

DeMar DeRozan shot just 8-for-23 but finished with a game-high 29 points as the Raptors downed the Mavericks, 122-115 in overtime. Jonas Valenciusnas (YOH’-nuhs val-ehn-CHOO’-nuhs) delivered 21 points and a team-high 12 rebounds for Toronto, which trailed by six heading into the fourth quarter.

The Celtics held off the Magic, 92-83 as Terry Rozier and Greg Monroe each scored 17 points to help Boston end a two-game skid. Al Horford chipped in 15 points to help the Celts win despite shooting under 38 percent.

Checking out Friday’s other NBA action:

— The Kings won in Oakland for the second time this season as Buddy Hield (heeld) contributed 22 points, seven assists and seven boards off the bench to guide Sacramento past Golden State, 98-93. Hield made three free throws over the final 27.5 seconds as the Kings allowed the Rockets to move 2 ½ games ahead of the Warriors in the battle for the NBA’s best record.

— The Thunder knocked off the Clippers, 121-113 as Corey Brewer scored 22 points and Russell Westbrook recorded his 22nd triple-double of the season. Westbrook furnished 16 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists, while Steven Adams added 18 points and 14 boards to Oklahoma City’s fifth consecutive win.

— Joel Embiid (joh-EHL’ ehm-BEED’) had another big game and Robert Covington hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 35.4 seconds left before the 76ers survived a battle with the lowly Nets, 120-116. Embiid finished with 24 points and a career-high 19 rebounds, while Ben Simmons contributed 21 points, 12 assists and eight boards to help the Sixers get within a half-game of the Wizards for the fifth seed in the East.

— Goran Dragic capped his 30-point night by nailing a go-ahead jumper with 15 seconds left in the Heat’s 92-91 victory over the Lakers. Kelly Olynyk scored 17 points for Miami, which is in a tie with the Bucks for seventh in the East.

NBA-WARRIORS-DURANT

Durant out at least 2 weeks

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The Golden State Warriors have another injury to deal with.

Kevin Durant will miss at least two weeks with a fractured rib. The All-Star said he got hit in the ribs during Sunday’s game against Minnesota.

The Warriors are also without All-Stars Stephen (STEH’-fehn) Curry and Klay Thompson.

NBA-CLIPPERS-RIVERS FINED

NBA fines Rivers

NEW YORK (AP) — Los Angeles Clippers coach Doc Rivers has been fined $15,000 for criticizing the officiating after the Clippers’ loss to the Houston Rockets.

Rivers said his team didn’t get the foul calls it deserved after the Clippers lost 101-96 to the Rockets on Thursday night.

Cardinals sign Bradford

UNDATED (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals have addressed their dire need for a quarterback by signing Sam Bradford. The Cardinals had no QBs on their roster after the retirement of Carson Palmer and the departure of free agents Drew Stanton and Blaine Gabbert.

Bradord has started each of his 80 NFL games since being taking No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 draft, for the Rams, Eagles and Vikings.

— The Raiders have signed free-agent long snapper Andrew DePaola to a four-year, $4.27 million contract.

— Detroit has re-signed running back Zach Zenner, who returns for his fourth season with the Lions.

— The Bears have agreed to one-year contracts with punter Pat O’Donnell, tight end Daniel Brown and quarterback Tyler Bray.

— The Titans are releasing defensive lineman Karl Klug after seven years with the team.

— The Giants have signed offensive lineman Patrick Omameh and defensive back Curtis Riley.

— The Jets have signed cornerback Trumaine Johnson to a five-year, $72.5 million contract.

— The Eagles have released defensive end Vinny Curry in a cost-cutting move.

— The Vikings have signed defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson to bolster what was already one of the NFL’s top defenses.

— A person familiar with the situation says the Packers have signed Bears cornerback Kyle Fuller to an offer sheet.

— The Chargers have signed kicker Caleb Sturgis to a two-year deal.

— Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict is appealing a four-game suspension from the NFL for violating its policy on performance-enhancing substances. It’s the third straight season that he’s facing punishment from the league.

NHL-SCHEDULE

Caps slam Isles for 2nd straight day

UNDATED (AP) — The Washington Capitals are back atop the NHL’s Metropolitan Division after whipping the New York Islanders for the second straight day.

Power-play goals by T.J. Oshie (OH’-shee), Nicklas Backstrom and Alex Chiasson (CHAY’-sahn) carried the Caps to a 6-3 win over the Isles. Oshie had three goals in the home-and-home series after going 19 games without one.

Matt Niskanen, Lars Eller and Jakub Vrana also scored as the Capitals moved two points ahead of the Penguins.

Rookie Mathew Barzal had a goal and an assist for the Islanders, who scored three times with the man advantage and still lost for the 10th time in 11 games.

Elsewhere in the NHL:

— Colton Sissons and Filip Forsberg each scored twice as the Predators doubled up the Avalanche, 4-2 to clinch a playoff berth. Juuse Saros (YOO’-see SAH’-rohs) turned back 33 shots for Nashville, which has gone 13-0-1 in its last 14 games to take a 10-point lead in the Central Division.

— Jason Zucker scored the opening goal and set up Matt Dumba’s game-winning as the Wild downed the Golden Knights, 4-2. Alex Stalock (STAY’-lahk) stopped 26 shots in helping the Wild move three points ahead of Colorado and Dallas for third place in the Central Division.

— Evander Kane erupted for four goals in the Sharks’ 7-4 win at Calgary. San Jose moved three points ahead of third-place Los Angeles in the Pacific Division, while the Flames stayed four points out of a playoff berth.

— Mike Hoffman’s goal at 3:26 of overtime completed the Senators’ 3-2 win over the Stars. Marian Gaborik (GAB’-uh-reek) and Steve Duchene (doo-SHAYN’) had third-period goals as Ottawa prevented Dallas from taking sole possession of the first wild-card berth in the Western Conference.

— The Ducks are in a seventh-place tie with the Stars and Avalanche after Corey Perry scored the tiebreaking goal to send Anaheim past the Red Wings, 4-2. Detroit lost its ninth in a row to match the team’s longest slide since dropping nine straight in February 1986.

MLB-ASTROS-ALTUVE

UNDATED (AP) — A person familiar with the negotiations says AL MVP Jose Altuve and the World Series champion Houston Astros have agreed to a contract that guarantees him an additional $151 million over five seasons from 2020-24.

The average annual value of the new money is $30.2 million, among baseball’s highest.

The 5-foot-6 Altuve hit .346 last season to win his second straight AL batting title and third in four seasons. He had 24 homers, 82 RBIs and 32 stolen bases in his MVP season.

In other baseball news:

— Third baseman Eugenio (ay-oo-HAY’-nee-oh) Suarez and the Reds have agreed to a $66 million, seven-year contract, a deal that includes a team option for 2025 that if exercised would make the deal worth $79 million over eight years. Suarez hit .260 last season and set career bests with 26 homers, 82 RBIs and .828 OPS.

— The Twins have designated first baseman Kennys Vargas for assignment.

— Former Mets third baseman Ed Charles has died at age 84. Charles broke into the majors with the 1962 Kansas City A’s at age 29 and was among the spiritual leaders on the 1969 Miracle Mets that won 100 games and the World Series after going 73-89 the previous season. Charles was a lifetime .263 hitter with 86 homers and 421 RBIs.

PGA-PALMER INVITATIONAL

Stenson, DeChambeau share Palmer lead

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Henrik Stenson and Bryson DeChambeau were co-leaders when the second round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational wound down at Bay Hill. Stenson carded three birdies after the turn for a 3-under 69, and DeChambeau signed off on a 66.

Talor Gooch is two off the lead and one ahead of Byeong Hun An.

Tiger Woods didn’t make a birdie until the 12th hole and shot 72 to fall seven strokes back.

Ducks’ Bieksa out

UNDATED (AP) — Anaheim Ducks defenseman Kevin Bieksa (bee-EHK’-suh) will be out for two to five weeks following surgery Friday to remove scar tissue from his left hand.

The 36-year-old has eight assists in 59 games this season for Anaheim, which is fighting to get into playoff position with three weeks left in the regular season.

In other hockey news:

— Former NHL forward Ilya Kovalchuk (EEL’-yah KOH’-vul-chook) says he wants to return to the league this summer and play there for “several more years.” Kovalchuk walked out on the New Jersey Devils in 2013 to return to Russia, where he has since won two Kontinental Hockey League titles.

FIFA MEETING

FIFA OKs video review for World Cup

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — FIFA says it has approved video review to help referees at the World Cup.

The last step toward giving match officials high-tech help in Russia was agreed to on Friday by FIFA’s ruling council chaired by President Gianni Infantino. The decision follows two weeks after FIFA’s rule-making panel voted to write video assistant referees (VAR) into the laws of soccer.

FIFA Council member Reinhard Grindel writes on his Twitter account that clear communication will be important to make the system a success.

WORLD CUP SKIING FINALS

Overall champion Shiffrin wins season-ending slalom, Hirscher takes last men’s GS

ARE, Sweden (AP) — Overall champion Mikaela Shiffrin won her seventh slalom of the season at the World Cup finals on Saturday.

Holding on to a commanding first-run lead, the American won by a massive 1.58 seconds over Wendy Holdener of Switzerland. Olympic slalom champion Frida Hansdotter of Sweden was another 0.01 behind in third.

It was Shiffrin’s 32nd victory in the discipline and 43rd overall. She secured her fifth slalom season title and second straight overall championship last week.

Earlier, men’s overall champion Marcel Hirscher won the season-ending men’s giant slalom for his 58th career victory. The Austrian became only the third skier to win 13 races in a single World Cup season.
