Hillyard talks suicide prevention

LOGAN – Republican State Senator Lyle Hillyard said there are too many suicides in Cache Valley and in Utah, in spite of the fact that the legislature has been working hard to decrease that number. Hillyard said two of the legislators that have been working hard on the issue are Senator Dan Thatcher and Representative Steve Elaison.

The legislature is also getting technology involved.

“We now have apps that can go on all phones, kids can get them, and they can get in immediate contact with somebody in a counseling department if they feel depressed or other things so they can have immediate contact,” Hillyard said. “One of the things we did this year is put 24/7 coverage on it. Before, we didn’t have that coverage. People were calling and no one was there. So that is the first step we did. In public education, we gave $2.1 million to enhance counseling in schools.”

He said in addition to seeking more money we should all do our part in helping people who show signs of problems that could lead to suicide.
