Crews find drowning victim at Hyrum Reservoir

HYRUM — Search and Rescue crews have recovered the body of a Box Elder County man who reportedly drown in Hyrum Reservoir Friday afternoon. The 18-year-old was cliff jumping on the east side of the lake at Big Toe when he failed to resurface.

Cache County Sheriff Chad Jensen said the man was with a group of approximately 40 youth at the time. He was seen jumping from the cliff and then struggling after surfacing. The victim went back under the water and did not resurface.

Members of the group attempted to help the victim unsuccessfully while a woman called 911. The accident was reported at 2:25 p.m.

Rescue units from the Cache County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff’s Search and Rescue, officers from State Parks and medical personnel responded to the scene.

Jensen said the victim’s identity is not being released, pending notification of family members. On-call crisis workers from Bear River Mental Health and the Cache County Victim Advocates were used to help offer services and direct others to needed resources for the witnesses.

“Our deepest condolences are with all those who are enduring this tragic incident,” said Jensen.
