Friday night’s opening play to begin the 51st season of the Lyric Repertory Company is Sense & Sensibility.
Lyric Rep’s co-artistic director Dennis Hassan said it is adapted from Jane Austen’s classic novel, and he calls it one of her very best as the audience waits the entire play for the couples to get back together.
“This is the story of the Dashwood Sisters,” Hassan explained. “One has all the sense and sensibility. One is very romantic, kind of flighty and wants somebody who is beautiful but will also just pull at her heart strings. The other one is so sensible that she won’t take the first step.
“So they go about helping each other to overcome these difficulties in the men in their lives; I will wait for you to see the ending. Basically you are sitting there the whole time going, ‘Just kiss the girl, just kiss the girl!’ It’s one of those great romances.”
Sense & Sensibility starts the season’s run Friday and Saturday, June 15-16. An open reception will take place immediately following Friday’s performance where the public can meet the cast and crew.
Opening dates for the season’s other productions are Friday, June 22 for Peter and the Starcatcher; Thursday, June 28 for Grey Gardens; and, Thursday-Saturday July 5-7 for Macbeth.
