Smithfield man arrested for DUI after causing injury crash near Amalga

A Smithfield man has been arrested and two people, a mother and child, have been hospitalized after a two-vehicle crash Thursday morning, south of Amalga.

Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Cade Brenchley said the mother and toddler were driving eastbound in an SUV, on SR-218. As they approached the intersection at 2400 West, Zane B. Trivitt was driving a Cadillac southbound. The 32-year-old allegedly drove through a stop sign, striking the SUV on its side.

“She went down into a ditch, right next to the intersection,” explained Brenchley. “He was not wearing a seat belt. His injuries were fairly minor, however he was transported to the hospital. The other driver and her son were transported to Logan Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. However, she was in a lot of pain.”

The mother and child were both seat belted.

As troopers began to investigate, they found an open container of alcohol in Trivitt’s car. He also admitted to drinking and using methamphetamine. He claimed though to have stopped at the intersection, and did not see the approaching SUV.

“There is a couple witnesses that said he didn’t come close to stopping,” said Brenchley. “He just went right through [the intersection].

Trivitt was arrested on a felony DUI and an outstanding warrant for an unrelated charge. Court records show he has been arrested multiple times for driving under the influence, drug use and reckless driving. He was previously ordered to serve one-year in prison.

How many times does one need to be arrested for DUI before they are locked up for good? He could have easily killed someone. Hope he gets a stiff penalty this time.
