Collin Kartchner, a videographer by trade, has changed lenses and become a social media activist. He comes to the Utah State University Spectrum Monday, January 14, at 7 p.m. to spread the word about the negative effects of social media and how to use phones and tablets to benefit others.
Kartchner teamed up with other professionals and traveled throughout the inter-mountain area informing parents of media pitfalls and trying to save children and adults from its harmful effects.
This time he teams up with Dr. Christy Kane. Dr. Kane, a licensed mental health counselor who practices in Utah County and in Salt Lake, works with both adults and teenagers and uses her professional experience to help others overcome difficult moments in their lives.
“I will focus on the electronics and how it affects the brain,” Kane said. “My presentation is more science based and deals more with my education and experience.”
Unplug and Connect is a follow-up program to Dr. Kane’s address. It is delivered via the Discovery Destination Facebook communities.
Both of the presenters are all about getting people to rethink the time they use with electronic media, by showing the negative effects of too much time on their phones tablets and other devices.
Today the major issues of social media include bullying and depression with today’s teens.
Benefiting others, Kartchner has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars helping people going through natural disasters using twitter and other social media.
CORRECTION: Kartcheners movement is was previously referred to as Unplug and Connect. His movement is #SAVETHEKIDS Fighting Social Media’s Influence on Teen Mental Health.
