Ridgeline cheer squad wins state competition, other Region 12 cheerleaders named to All State

Several girls and a team from Region 12 performed well at the 2019 state cheer competition held at Salt Lake Community College on Saturday. Cambria Christensen (Bear River High School), Kiyan Marshall and Leelee Artist (both from Green Canyon High School) were three of only five recognized as members of the 4A All State Cheer Team.

As a team, Ridgeline High School’s cheer squad won the Sideline Free Style competition for 4A, finishing ahead of Cedar and Uintah.

Cheer teams competed in a variety of events, including song leading, fight song, time out cheer, time out dance and others.

According to Lori Rupp, co-director of the state cheer competition, cheerleading is not a sanctioned sport under the jurisdiction of the Utah High School Activities Association. UHSAA does provide support, however, to “most high school sports by attending games and creating a spirited atmosphere and promoting school spirit.”

Besides having a state competition for teams and students, awards were also handed out for coaches. The Utah Cheer Coach of the Year Award was awarded to 3A Coach Dani Dickinson from South Sevier High School, 4A Coach Kayshia Roemer from Snow Canyon High School, 6A Coach Erika Wilde from Hillcrest High School, Jr High Coach of the Year Tracy Nolan from North Layton Junior High. The scholarship award recipient was Leighton Davis from Corner Canyon High School.
