After a slow first half Landon Brenchley really turned it on in the second, along with picking up a technical, and put the Mustangs away for a 63-45 win. Brenchley finished with 22 points and fueled the Riverhawks to their second Region 12 win and got them out of the basement.
Mountain Crest started in a zone defense but confusion on close outs left Ridgeline shooters open, making five 3’s and going up 21-13 after the first quarter. The Riverhawks went on a 7-0 in the first 90 seconds of the second quarter to push their lead to 15 points before Matthew Barber fueled a 10-0 Mountain Crest run. Barber scored six points, assisted Austin Young on a jumper and got a steal that sent Caleb Archibald to the line for two points. The Mustangs outscored Ridgeline 14-3 the last six minutes to be only down 31-27 at half.
However, the second half was all Ridgeline as they opened the third quarter on a 7-1 run and then went on a 12-0 run the fourth quarter to get to their biggest lead of the night at 19. The Riverhawks outscored Mountain Crest 32-18 in the second half and Brenchley was a huge factor in those runs, scoring 15 of his 22 points and going 4-5 from the free throw line after missing all three he took in the first half.
Junior Damuni added eight points in the second half and finished with 17 as the only other Riverhawk in double figures. Kordell Welch had a big first quarter scoring 10 of the team’s 13 points for Mountain Crest but only finished with 14, tied with Barber for the team high. Barber scored 10 points in the second quarter before going quiet for the second half also. Austin Young was the only other Mustang in double figures with 11 points.
When these two teams met the first time, Ridgeline out shot Mountain Crest 37 to 7 at the free throw line. In the second meeting the Mustangs went 10-13 and the Riverhawks 11-16 from the charity stripe but Mountain Crest had 17 turnovers to Ridgline’s 10.
