Logan School District breaks ground on new Hillcrest Elementary School

Hundreds of students, parents, teachers and alumni of Hillcrest Elementary gathered outside the school Tuesday afternoon to ceremonially turn over some dirt. The ceremony marked the official start of an 18-month construction project by the Logan City School District to build a completely new elementary school on Logan’s east bench. Hillcrest Elementary was originally constructed in 1961.

It’s going to be a beautiful school,” exclaims District Superintendent Frank Schofield. “The community and our staff have been involved in designing that and identifying what our needs are. That will be a fun project to get going.”

The school will be built on the same property – just to the east of the existing school – at 960 North 1400 East in Logan. Schofield says this will allow a very minor disruption to classes at the end of this school year and throughout the upcoming school year. He says the district worked closely with Logan City to ensure adequate parking, that any disruptions to traffic would be accounted for, and to make sure there would be appropriate space for the school and the construction project. The new school was designed by VCBO Architects with input from current teachers at Hillcrest. DWA Construction will begin work on the new building immediately.

“We started talking about building this school about nine years ago,” said Logan School Board President Ann Geary at the groundbreaking. “Then we had to go to people and say ‘please help us build it.’ Then your teachers and these other people have been helping to design this building.”

At the groundbreaking, she shared a quote from Winston Churchill, “we shape our buildings then our buildings shape us.”

Geary said the new building will have a fun design that will make the students think and help shape their future.

Once the new Hillcrest Elementary is completed, the district will shift its focus to remodeling and expanding Ellis Elementary.

“No ground will be broken, no actual work will take place until the new Hillcrest school is completely finished,” Schofield explains. “In order to do the rebuild, due to the size constraints and size of the property, we will be busing students from Ellis up to Hillcrest during the construction period.”

The Ellis Elementary School rebuild will conclude the funding bond that was passed by Logan City voters in 2013, which also paid for a major remodeling project at Logan High School.

Schofield says other schools in the district are in need of some repair and minor upgrades, including Riverside Preschool, Adams Elementary and Mount Logan Middle School. Schofield says the district plans to use existing capitol funds and in-house money to tackle those projects.

I went to school there, my grandmother Edna Cardon Taylor taught 1st grade there, it is a wonderful school. LaVell Miller was an awesome Principal , Cleone Dally was the secretary. So many good teachers past and present. Lots of happy memories.
