Tabernacle volunteer recognized as a Logan Hero

Daniel Starks may be retired, but he’s certainly not standing still or relaxing on a beach. For the last 11 years, Starks has been the appointed manager of the Logan Tabernacle, overseeing everything that takes place in and around the historic building, including maintenance, security and tours. This week, the 87-year-old was recognized for his service and dedication, recognized as Logan’s Hero for Winter 2019.

The honor was bestowed on Starks by local restaurant Logan’s Heroes. The restaurant has been gathering nominations for the award over the past several months, wanting to play off their name while also recognizing people in the community who are doing good things. Co-owner Preston Parker said restaurant employees gathered the nominations and discussed who should be recognized.

“We went and visited the Tabernacle to get to know him a little bit,” Parker said. “We decided that he fit what we were looking for, as far as that home-town feel and making Logan special. What Dan has been doing at the Logan Tabernacle fit what we were looking for.”

Starks began his professional career in Southern California as a cryogenics engineer in the aerospace industry. In the 1960s and ’70s he assisted on the Apollo space missions. While in his late 30s, he moved his family of six children to Cache Valley and became a refrigerator mechanic until he retired just two years ago. Starks has meetings or events in the Tabernacle seven days a week and visits with tens of thousands of tourists every summer.

“They’re a very generous group doing a very wonderful thing for our community,” Starks said of Logan’s Heroes, “recognizing people who do try and giving some of their profit to local charities.”

Parker said that each time someone is recognized as Logan’s Hero, the restaurant finds out what their favorite sandwich might be. For Starks, it’s roast beef. And whenever someone orders that sandwich over the next couple of months, a local charity will benefit.

“When you buy that sandwich, a portion of the proceeds will go to the (Cache Community) Food Pantry,” Parker explained. “We allow the Logan’s Hero to choose the organization and we will give a percentage to the organization. So, thank you for choosing the Food Pantry.”

Nominations are currently being collected at the restaurant for the Spring 2019 Logan’s Hero. Hamid Salehi, the previous owner of Logan’s Heroes, was the first to receive the Logan’s Hero award last December, recognizing him for his contributions to the community.
