LOGAN — A 41-year-old Providence man has been arrested on suspicion of physically abusing a child. Sheyler J. Gunnell was booked Tuesday afternoon into the Cache County Jail. He was being held on two felony counts of child abuse.

Cache County Sheriff’s Lt. Doyle Peck said the victim’s mother originally contacted deputies in February, reporting that her teenager was physically assaulted by Gunnell. The case was transferred to agents with the Division of Child and Family Services, who interviewed the boy.

The victim was reportedly an acquaintance of the suspect, who was also considered a person of trust.

Peck explained that detectives began investigating the case when substantial evidence was found to substantiate the allegations. They interviewed Gunnell and later took him into custody.

Deputies report Gunnell was released from jail after posting $15,000 bond.

Formal charges are pending the completion of detectives’ investigation.
