Director of Utah’s Department of Natural Resources retires

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The longtime executive director of the Utah Department of Natural Resources is retiring.

Gov. Gary Herbert announced Mike Styler is stepping down from his post at the agency after more than 14 years. His retirement is effective June 1.

Herbert is expected to name his pick for a replacement Monday.

Styler leaves the department after leading it through the launch of the Watershed Restoration Initiative. The state says the initiative so far has resulted in 2,000 projects related to areas including ecosystem health, biological diversity, water quality and sustainability for Utah’s watersheds.

More than 1.6 million acres of land have been restored under the program.

Styler says his tenure at the department has been rewarding. He praised his staff, saying they have the capability to meet environmental challenges, including fires.

Styler is a farmer from Oasis.
