Expect delays traveling through Logan Canyon this summer

Motorists using Highway 89 in Logan Canyon to Garden City can expect delays due to resurfacing seven miles of pavement and other construction projects.

Motorists on their way to Bear Lake during the next few months may want to be aware of the road work being done on Highway 89 through Logan Canyon. They’ll need to either plan an alternative route or plan for more time to get through the canyon.

Generally, the nearly 60-mile trip of winding road takes about an hour from Logan to Garden City.

The Logan Canyon route is not only used by Cache Valley residents, but many vacationer’s from the Wasatch Front as the main road to Bear Lake.

With the summer rush getting underway, Utah Department of Transportation Communications manager Vic Saunders says people may consider going a different route.

Consider using alternate routes to Bear Lake, such as Idaho 36, from Preston to Ovid,” said Saunders. “Beginning Friday, SR-39, the Monte Cristo Highway, will be available to motorists headed to the Bear Lake Valley.”

UDOT is resurfacing the road in the canyon, necessitating a closed lane and a flagger directing traffic.

Saunders said there are some repairs and repaving on a seven-mile stretch of US-89, from Right Hand Fork Bridge to the Tony Grove turn-off.

Not only are we repaving the highway, we are paving three safety pullouts on US-89, from Tony Grove to the UDOT Maintenance Station near the summit. Both are underway concurrently in Logan Canyon,” he said. “Motorists should anticipate one-way traffic, led by a pilot car, with up to a 15-minute delay through the paving work area.”

The pullouts are being made so drivers with trailers or heavy loads can pull into them to let others pass when they slow down too much.

Saunders wanted motorists to be aware of traffic lane shifts in the areas where crews are working on the safety pullouts.

“Use caution when driving through these areas and be aware of workers and equipment in closed lanes,” Saunders said. “Road project work times are Monday through Thursday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.”
