Education continues on pilot program allowing dogs in various Logan parks

LOGAN – Dog owners are loving the fact they can now bring their pets to a number of Logan City parks. However, three months into a 12-month pilot program allowing dogs off-leash in various parks, there is still a lot of confusion as to the locations and restrictions.

“It’s taking a little while for people to know a couple of things,” according to Russ Akina, Director of Logan City Parks and Recreation. “Most recently, we have had to do more reminders to park users that have dogs.”

Those reminders are coming in the form of phone calls, emails, Facebook posts and face-to-face contact with dog owners.

The pilot program which was recently approved for a one year trial period went into effect on April 15. As part of the program, city staff monitor the parks and make sure people are aware of the rules and restrictions.

Signs are posted in the approved parks, but many residents weren’t certain they were legitimate because some said they didn’t appear “official”.

“We’ve ordered more signs,” said Akina. “We’re putting the department logo and the city code reference on it so they can refer to it if they have questions.”

According to a Logan City Facebook post reminder – dogs are allowed off-leash in the following parks:

Jens Johansen Park, 850 East 100 North

Jones Neighborhood Park, 400 West 625 North

Kilowatt Park, 331 South 300 West

Logan Meadows Park, 350 South 600 West

Pioneer Parkway, 165 East Poplar Avenue Ray

Hugie Hydro Park, Northside of US 89 at Canyon Road

Logan Service Center East Lawn Area, 810 West 600 North

Dogs are permitted off-leash within the gated dog run area at Rendezvous Park, at Deer Crest between Lundstrom Park and 1500 North, and behind the flood control impoundment at the end of Mountain Road at Dry Canyon.

Dogs are NOT allowed in any other park within the Logan City Parks System except for parks that may have a sidewalk through the park. Dogs MUST stay on the sidewalk and be on a leash at all times. Dogs are not allowed in any other area of the park.

Pet owners are required to adhere to the following:

Properly bag and dispose of dog waste in provided City trash cans

Dogs must have a current license

Dogs must not harass others

Dogs must not be unattended

Dogs must be under voice control

Dogs must not be a nuisance

Logan City staff will place red NO DOGS ALLOWED signs to remind dog owners that dogs are only allowed in Logan’s Dog Friendly Parks as noted.
