LOGAN — A 24-year-old Hyrum man, who was convicted of multiple drug crimes during the last two years, has been sentenced to prison. Daniel C. Skinner-Scheller was given the maximum sentence for the 12 charges he previously pleaded guilty to. He was ordered to serve between one to 15-years behind bars.
Skinner-Scheller was sentenced in 1st District Court Monday morning. He was previously convicted of two counts of distributing a controlled substance, a second-degree felony; six counts of drug possession and two counts of possessing a firearm as a restricted person, all third-degree felonies; and two misdemeanors for possessing drug paraphernalia.
Defense attorney Aaron Bergman told the court that Skinner-Scheller wants to change his life but doesn’t know how. He asked the court for drug rehabilitation instead of prison, noting that his client had potential if given the right treatments.
Cache County Chief Deputy Attorney Spencer Walsh disagreed. He explained how Skinner-Scheller was seen in photographs with mushrooms and an AK-47. He also said one of the defendant’s customers allegedly overdosed and died.
Skinner-Scheller told the court he was truly ashamed and disgusted for what he did. He asked for mercy, saying he didn’t want to go to prison and become a broken person. He said he had battled drug addictions for most of his life, dropping out of college and leaving several good jobs so he could get high.
Judge Thomas Willmore said the court had given Skinner-Scheller a chance at drug court twice. He noted how each time the defendant ran away from the program. Judge Willmore explained that he didn’t have any other choice than to send him to prison.
