Mountain Crest can’t recover from flustered start

HYRUM – It felt like a Green Canyon home game as the students came out in full from buzzer to buzzer in Hyrum. The Wolves were comfortable from the tip, while Mountain Crest looked flustered with only 3 first quarter points and 8 first quarter turnovers on the way to a 64-43 loss.

Caleb Archibald hit a 3 on the last possession of the first quarter to finally get the Mustangs on the scoreboard but the slow start doomed them on their way to (0-2) Region 11 start. Coach Kevin Anderson’s squad was only outscored 24-23 in the second half against Green Canyon but 12 first half turnovers let Green Canyon build a 20 point lead at half.

The 18-3 first quarter lead for Green Canyon stretched to 26-7 with just over 5 minutes left in the second and Mountain Crest could not trim the deficit and the Wolves led the whole game. Senior Carter Maughn carried the Green Canyon offense with a game high 20 points, scoring 16 in the first half. Cade DeBoard had 12, McKay Yorgason 8 and Cole DeBoard 8 as the Wolves’ offense pushed tempo all night while firing a barrage of 3 pointers. Coach Dan McLure’s offense kept the pressure on after opening a big first quarter lead never letting the lead get smaller than 17.

Leading Mustang scorer Marshall Nethercott had another rough game, finishing with only 5 points while coming in averaging over 14. Mountain Crest ball handlers had trouble getting him the ball and Green Canyon’s defense swarmed him when Marshall had it. Tanner Bone led the team with 11 points and Nick Lefevre did have a solid game with 10 points and 2 steals.

Senior Caleb Archibald returned to the starting lineup after missing the games against Box Elder and Logan and junior Brayden Burnside also played after missing games due to an elbow injury early in the season.
