Developers want to amend code for Logan’s campus residential zone

LOGAN – Last week, architect and owners of the “Blue Haven” housing development met with members of the Logan City Council. On Thursday they will be at the city’s planning commission meeting seeking the necessary approvals for their five-story student housing project to accommodate 372 students.

The housing development will be located at 743 N. 800 East in the Campus Residential Zone. The application for developers includes a text amendment to modify the language of the code amendment for the zone. Co-owner John Brandley said the developers want to offer diverse options in student housing.

“We are not seeking to increase the maximum density at all,” he said. “Under the current code, 240 occupants are allowed per acre. That’s the maximum density. The current code incentivizes placing six tenants per unit to attain that maximum density. What we are seeking to do is to switch those incentives to afford the developers the flexibility to utilize the maximum density, the 240 occupants, in a way that makes sense for the developer, for the students and to cater to market demand.”

The owners own several other local properties which they say have been profitable investments.
