LOGAN— A lot of local students will soon have an opportunity to learn a second language through the Dual Language Immersion Program, which is coming to both the Logan and Cache County School Districts this next school year.

The program is coming to four elementary schools in the Cache County School District – Sunrise in Smithfield, Heritage in Nibley, North Park in North Logan and Providence Elemetary. Both Bridger and Hillcrest elementary are offering the program in the Logan School District.

Hillcrest Principal Eric Markworth said a parent information meeting regarding the Dual Language Immersion Program will be held Thursday from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at Hillcrest Elementary, which is located at 960 North 1400 East.

On KVNU's Crosstalk show Tuesday, Markworth said more than 70,000 Utah students are now involved in the Dual Language Immersion program and parents praise the benefits such as cognitive ability and achievement gains.

“The day really is divided into two halves. Half of the day their language arts and reading and writing block is still taught in English, but then the other half of the day is taught in their target language. There are four languages that are available (Mandarin) Chinese, French, Portuguese, and Spanish.”

For more information visit the Utah State Office of Education website, or call Hillcrest Elementary at 435-755-2360.
