Parent group urging for Cache County and Logan School District merger

LOGAN— The Cache County School District has approved the purchase of land in Millville for a new high school and plans are going forward for a $99 million bond election that will include several other schools.

Now a parent group called “Parents for School District Merger” has organized to push for changing those plans and instead merging the Logan and Cache Couny School Districts. Amanda Wilkinson, former teacher and mother of five, said a lot of parents are opposed to the district’s plan

“I think the impetus for what is getting everyone in Cache County involved is all of a sudden parents are realizing that in order to split the population of Mountain Crest and the population of Sky View – and to relieve the burdens of the overcrowding at both of those high schools – we’re going to have to find some place in the middle to build a high school where those students to meet. The problem is there is a doughnut hole,” Wilkinson said on KVNU’s For the People show Monday.

She said the doughnut hole is Logan City which is right in the middle of the district. Wilkinson and Danny Brownell said parents are concerned about the hundreds of cars that will be crisscrossing the area to go to the new high school and other schools built in the area. They say if they get signatures of 15 percent of the voters, the group can get the issue on the ballot.

The Cache County School District is considering a June bond election.
