CDC awarding Utah $934k to fight Zika

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is giving Utah $934,000 to help the state’s efforts to fight the Zika virus.

The agency said Thursday the money is the state’s share of $60 million awarded to states, cities and territories to protect people from the virus and its effects, which can include serious birth defects.

The money will go toward studying the disease, improving mosquito control and participation in a registry to monitor pregnant Zika-infected women and their babies.

There have been eight cases of Zika reported in Utah, including a Salt Lake County man who became the person in the continental United States after contracting the virus. His son who took care of him was also infected in a case that’s raising new questions about how the disease is transmitted.
