Growth and density will always be big topics in Logan City

Logan Mayor Craig Petersen is not running for a second term, but on KVNU’s monthly Speak to the Mayor program during For the People on Wednesday, he shared some thoughts about the current topics for discussion and debate among the mayoral and council candidates.

One issue that has been a hot topic is parking and another has been housing density.

“Part of that, I think, we had the Garden Park apartments project that’s now been, at least temporarily, withdrawn,” Petersen said. “And there are several of the council candidates who, I think, probably their choice of running was based on their concern about that particular project. So I think that’s perhaps expected that (it) would be a major topic.”

The mayor continued, “and it continues to be a project. Logan is a repository for all the multi-family housing throughout the valley. The other communities have basically said ‘we don’t want it’ for the most part, except for North Logan, and that’s certainly their choice. We have the university in Logan City and so we’re always going to have more multi-family housing.”

With projections that forecast a doubling of the population in the not-too-distant future, Petersen said our present modes of housing will take up large amounts of open space. So housing density will continue to be a big area of concern as the valley grows and will have to be accommodated to the greatest satisfaction of all.
