Reminisce about ‘dragging Main’ at the Cache Valley Cruise-In

It all started in 1982 with a group of five people working together to organize the first Cache Valley Cruise-In. It has grown each successive year and is now attracting over 1000 vehicles.

They include street rods, street machines, customs, restored vehicles, motorcycles, and trucks to the Cache County Fairgrounds and attendance has risen to more than 30-thousand people.

KVNU’s For the People program was live at the fairgrounds for the first day of the automotive spectacular. John Rutledge, president of the Cache Valley Cruising Association, said the history of car shows goes back to your mom and dad or perhaps your grandparents.

“They would go to hamburger stands and hang out because they didn’t have anything else to do. So they (dragged) Main. I mean, I remember when I was a teenager, we used to drag Main all the time. Turn around at Pete’s Spudnut and go back down to the ‘Y’ and turn around,” Rutledge remembers.

“But it was something to do and you were always showing off your car and you were doing this to your car. So nowadays we have these car shows and we bring back the cars. And moms and dads can come down here and say ‘Oh I remember when I used to drag Main in that!’,” Rutledge said.

The Cache Valley Cruise-In started Thursday and continues Friday and Saturday and admission is just $5 for anyone 18 and over and $1.00 for ages 5-17. Your admittance ticket gives you a chance at the yearly giveaway car. This year it’s a 1970 Chevy Camaro RS. That will be given away Saturday evening followed by the famous Cruise-In parade on Main Street in downtown Logan.
