Lewiston Library recognized with prestigious award

By Kate Clark -- USU's Hard News Cafe

LEWISTON–The prestigious award the Lewiston Library received last February has not received the attention it deserves.

The five-star rating awarded by the Library Journal demonstrates the small-town libraries circulation, visits, program attendance and Internet use per capita, earning them a higher rating than the Milford, North Logan and Mt. Pleasant libraries.

“I felt very proud to show the award to the mayor and city council,” said Chris Martinez, a library employee. “But people don’t read the Library Journal, and I’m not one to toot my own horn. I’m just not that kind of person.”

Martinez hung the plaque from the award on the wall of the library, but the librarians, mayor and city council remain among the few Lewiston residents that actually know about the award.

“It’s kind of sad when you’re recognized and nobody knows it,” said Martinez.

The small library that started out as five bookshelves on the top floor of a Lewiston drug store in 1931 now contains over 500 books. People travel from as far as Clarkston and Weston to check out books, magazines and movies, all for free. Free computer use and Wi-Fi are also offered at the Lewiston Library.

“Anything anyone wants can be found at the Lewiston Library,” said Martinez. “If not, we can get it.”
