Hyde Park, Amalga, Cornish cliffhangers continue

By Jennie Christensen

It could be five days before its determined who the next mayor of Hyde Park will be. When the votes had been counted Tuesday night Tom Price had 30 votes and his opponent Brian Cox had received 29. There were 12 provisional ballots, however, and they have been sent to the Cache County Clerk's office to be processed, after which they will go back to Hyde Park to be counted.

Current Hyde Park Mayor Dave Kooyman says the one with the most votes at that time will have won the election. A recount is required, however, if the difference is less than four votes.

Mayor Kooyman knows what sweating out an election is like because eight years ago he and Marilyn Grunig ended up with a tie on election night. A tie remained after the re-count and Kooyman's victory was actually determined by a flip of a coin.

Hyde Park is the only Cache County community where a mayor's race is still unresolved but a council race in Amalga and one in Cornish are still up in the air, too. Amalga council candidate David Williams, the second highest vote-getter, had 69 votes at the end of Tuesday's counting and Natalie Noyes received 66. There are five provisional ballots and two absentee ballots still to be counted.

In Cornish, there was a six-vote difference between council candidates Shannon Pitcher and Bradley Schumann so that vote could change after six provisional ballots are counted. The Cache County Clerk's office has up to five days after the election to confirm provisional ballots.
