Council unanimously approves Pyfer's Citizen Academy proposal

By Jennie Christensen

Her term as a Logan Municipal Councilmember ended Tuesday but not before her council colleagues voted unanimously to support her proposed Citizen Academy.

Pyfer told the council on Tuesday that she sees the need for residents of Logan to become more educated and more involved with city government. She says it would operate like the former Police Academy did in several ways and the idea is to have a better informed and more engaged citizenry.

"What this really is is an effort to have a better-informed and better-engaged citizenry," Pyfer said on KVNU's Crosstalk Show Wednesday. "And I believe that the benefits from having better information out there and more citizen involvement are that the citizens will learn how to access information on the city.

" When you read something in the paper, I want them to be able to say, 'I need to call so-and-so,' or 'I need to go the city's webiste,' or 'I'm going to call my councilmember on that.'"

Those participating in the multi-week academy will learn the best ways to access information about the city, including its website and how to reach councilmembers. Pyfer will manage the program on a volunteer basis until it gets off the ground.
