King: Tea Party people shouldn't try to create new party

By Craig Hislop

Michelle King is a member of Strategic Planning Committee of the local Tea Party Coalition. Although she was unable to attend the national rally in Nashville last weekend she has followed events closely.

“Apparently there was a lot of backlash and they lost some speakers at the last minute because of an ethics problem,” she said. “It turned out to be a ‘for profit’ group and people were upset that the tickets were being sold for $500 a piece and that the speakers were charging a lot of money.

“Most of these tea party coalitions are very loose coalitions, different groups working together where they have things in common. There is not one leader of everything. And that’s a good thing in that, if one fails somebody else can find a better idea. It kind of brings a free market concept into the movement.”

Where does King see the Tea Party movement going from here?

“The next step is for people to start working together and really focusing on getting people into office who will represent them and represent the constitution. Everyone involved needs to focus on their local areas and their local elected officials, making sure they’re holding those officials accountable.

Sarah Palin is not an official leader of the movement but her appearance Saturday before 1,100 activists seemed to capture the spirit of conservative grassroots.

“Those I spoke to who listened to her, were impressed with her,” said. King. They really liked it and were excited about it. Probably those who weren’t fans of Sarah Palin weren’t watching.”

Is Palin a viable Republican candidate for President?

“Whether or not it’s true, she’s been painted by the media as a laughingstock and a joke. I’m not sure she’s really very viable. I don’t know if she has enough depth to do a presidential campaign. She’s not one I’ve been impressed strongly enough to follow. At this point I’m hoping that other people will step up and run.”

King said the Tea Party Coalition becoming involved with a reformation of the Republican Party would be much more effective than starting a new party.

“There’s nothing wrong with the Republican platform,” she said. “What we need to do is hold our officials responsible to the platform they’re running under and hold them responsible to the laws. The problem isn’t the party itself, it’s the people who run the party.”

King said the local Tea Party Coalition is supporting the Young Republicans in their question-answer session Feb. 23 with Senate candidate Mike Lee at the Beehive Grill. “They’re not an official part of the coalition but we’re supporting that event because Mike Lee is a conservative candidate.”

"But we're supporting the event because Mike Lee is a conservative candidate." Awesome! Just wish Scott Bradley would run and show all these politically connected "Scholars" whats really up. BTW I would like to know what Senator Hatch campaigned on.... Was it being a Constitutional Conservative Scholar??? ahhhh... Did anyone know reading this that Hatch has passed more legislation than even "The Lion" Ted Kennedy? What does that tell you about the political class?

Ooops... sorry. I actually began to think I had a brain in my own head. I better go back to only believing the Republicans and Democrats propaganda that is being shoved down our throats. HONESTLY, I am SICK AND TIRED of my opinions being tossed off, as not real.. made up, manipulated, etc.... because middle Americans are finally speaking up and no longer being herded like sheep by to two organizations in this country that are only concerned with their own grasp of power. Am I a "tea Party" person... no, But I am in support of a 3rd party.

Wow, now that you have a computer you are suddenly a political scientist. I could insert the name of any group I opposed into your rather meaningless comment. Your line of logic--or rather lack thereof--is exactly what is wrong with political discourse in this country.

The commies amongst us are usually to stupid to realize they've been duped. It is a direct result of rather than reseach and reason it is much easier to believe without question. You are a sad bunch who know not, that you are.

Is this the same Michelle King that got so much attention during the Logan mayor race for her involvement with a losing canadite? Is she the leader for Icaucus in Logan and the Cache County Tea Party group?

"she’s been painted by the media as a laughingstock and a joke" Why don't you do some research on your own and not let the MEDIA paint the picture. The Main Stream Media is biased!! You do your own research.

Looks like the Tea Party has figured out how to scam the people out of thier money. The Tea Party is the greatest threat to the safety of our county. Them and Chris Buttars.

republicanblack, Do you have any idea how much it costs to rent a convention center? Security? To pay for volunteers to fly to the event location? To pay for meal tickets, catering, and speakers? This group will be lucky to break even and they probably knew they would be lucky to break even.

Look it seems that the Tea Party is the Al qaeda of political parties, a bunch of loosely affiliated individuals dedicated to bringing down this administration. Furthermore, judging from the price of a ticket one must admit that it is no real grassroots movement, but rather a hijacked movement. I saw this article that demonstrates why this movement will fail to accomplish its goals, I think if you are a tea partier you should read: http://bit.ly/bMdX8e
