Smithfield holding public hearing to discuss its form of government

By Cache Valley Daily

A proposal has been made to change the form of government in Smithfield and a public hearing is being held Tuesday to receive public comment. The hearing starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Smithfield Senior Citizens Center.

Those interested in reading and becoming familiar with the proposal can stop by the city offices or go online at www.smithfieldcity.org. The proposal has been pushed by Jeff Gittens since he served on the city council in the late 1990's.

Gittens believes that city manager Jim Gass has too much power under the ordinance where the engineer is actually the CEO. The new form of government calls for a six-member council and establishes the mayor as the CEO.

They should establish a Charter while they are at it, if they don't already have one.
